DEPARTMENT'S HELP
HEADS ENTERTAINED
The heads of Government Departments were entertained by the directors of the Centennial Exhibition; on Saturday evenuig in recognition of the work/they, had done in assisting f.he promotion and carrying out of the Rdngotai'fair. Mr. F. Johnston was official host .arid other directors were Messrs. C. Tx>dd, deputy-chairman; F. Campbell. W. McLay, and R. H. Nimmo. ■ Mr. C. P. Hainsworth, general manager of the Exhibition, and Mr. H. E, Avery, secretary and assist-ant-manager were also .present.
The guests included' Messrs. L. B; Campbell, B. C. ,Ashwin, Owen Campbell, A. R. Entrican,. W. Benzies, J. M. Park, D. J. Cummings, E. V. Paul, J G. Young, D. Adams, R. Casey, C. Collins, B. L. Dallard, and L. J. Schmitt.
Mr. Johnson said that the directors recognised that without the invaluable assistance of the heads of Government Departments the Exhibition would have been much more difficult to carry on. The directors appreciated, what had been done and it was surprising how many Government Departments were associated in one way or another with the running of the Exhibition. The Treasury Department had provided the money; the Crown Law Office had prepared the Centennial Act, viewed the memorandum . and articles of association of the company, and given legal assistance; the Customs Department had been most helpful in concessions of duty; the Education Department had granted the use of the old Newtown School buildings as a hostel and had arranged for school parties; the Tourist Department had arranged special advertising and special films; the Income Tax Department had been helpful; the Industries and Commerce Department had given general cooperation and supervision of the Government Court; the Internal Affairs Department had agreed to Mr. Heenan joining the directorate and. had also arranged for distinguished visitors; the Labour Department had been helpful in allowing the relaxation of certain awards; the Police " Department and the National Broadcasting Service had been of great asistance; the Native Department had arranged for the Maori concerts; the Post and Telegraph Department attended to the telegraph and postal facilities; the Prime Minister's: Department - had arranged for exhibits from'the Queen arid the Royal household; the Public Service Commissioner had made the staff available for the' Goverhment.Court; the Public Works Department had lent tractors for levelling the site; the Railway Department had granted freight rebates on exhibits and had arranged excursions; and the Stamp Duties Department had agreed to a rebate of company stamp duty. ,
Other speakers were Mr., Todd, Mr. F. Campbell* Mr. R. E. Casey,. General Manager of Railways, aiid Mrs. Ashwin, secretary to the5 Treasury. ..
In the speeches tribute was accorded to Mr. G. Sara for his work as manager of the Government Court.
