VICTORIA COLLEGE

INTER-FACULTY SPORTS

J. SUTHERLAND OUTSTANDING

The outstanding competitor at the Victoria University College annual inter-faculty athletic meeting at Kelburn Park on Saturday afternoon was J. Sutherland, 20-year-old holder of the Wellington provincial and New Zealand 100 yds championships and the best sprint prospect the Dominion has had for some time. He completely outclassed the opposition in both the 100 yds and 220 yds. These two events were not contests tn the true sense of the term so far as concerned first place, at any rate, Sutherland being so much better than his opponents. He treated both seriously, however, oven though in reality the race in eacJi was for second place, and by doing so got in two valuable runs in preparation for the New Zealand University championship meeting at Christchurch on Saturday and Monday next. He won the 100 yds by about twelve yards. The time, 11 l-ssec, was slow, but the track was not one conducive to fast times, and in the second place the race was run into a fresh north-westerly wind. His time of 22sec for the 220 yds, which he won by 20yds, was exceptionally fast, but in this event the wind was of assistance to him. At the New Zealand University meeting one of Sutherland's opponents will be I>. B. Duun, the crack .Sydney University sprinter, who has been credited with under even time for the 100 yds. Dunn is on a short tour of the Dominion with other Australian university men. Sutherland is looking forward to measuring .strides with this redoubtable Australian, and the meeting of the pair will be one of the high lights of the university championships. .Several others who are well known in athletics in Wellington were taking part, and generally were to the fore. K. Patience, provincial 120 yds hurdles champion, won hoth the 120 yds hurdles aud the 220 yds low hurdles.

D. R. Scrymgeour, weH-kuown distance runner, easily won the mile event. The three miles event was postponed until this evening. :

Unfortunately, owing to a train connection being missed, Mftssey College was not represented by a team. The Victoria College faculties represented were Law and Commerce and Arts and Science.
