BOUGHT FOR GERMANY?

AMERICAN COTTON

LESS SWEDISH IRON ORE

(Received March 15, 12.6 p.m.) ! * LONDON, March 14. Remarkable increases in the purchases of American cotton by neutral countries since the outbreak of war have resulted in the assumption that these countries are passing on supplies to Germany. The Minister for Economic Warfare, Mr. R. Cross, in the House of Commons, revealed that whereas German purchases in the three months ended November 30, 1939, dropped from 64,208,7071b to 2,917,7721b, purchases by neutrals in the same iperiod increased from 144,466,5301b to 344,419,3071b. Mr. Cross added that Sweden, in the three months ended February 29, exported 478,058 tons of iron ore to Germany, compared with 1,286,181 tons in the corresponding period last year. The Minister said that the AngloSwedish joint commission had supplied the figures, which the Intelligence Department had checked.
