Kathbella and Sir Crusoe Take Opening Day's Double

With the downward trend in totalisator investments that has Been in evidence at recent meetings, the general anticipation was that the long sequence of increased turnovers at Trentham would end on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Centennial Autumn Meeting yesterday. However, there was still another improvement in the figures, the £54,524 10s passing through the machine being , an increase of over 10 per cent, over last year's investments. It was a very clear demonstration that a small classic field, such as the St. Leger Stakes was, will not adversely affect a day's aggregate if it includes the best horse or horses of the season. The racing was generally of a high standard, but one somewhat r disappointing event as a contest was the Thompson Handicap, in • which many of the excellent field that paraded were unable to show *;.'"'' their real ability., Except for Beau Vite in the St. Leger, the favourites fared poorly. »
