SCHOOL CHILDREN

DEMONSTRATION GIVEN

Children drawn from the three t senior classes were given hearing tests by multiple audiometer at a demons j stration held at the Thorndon School | yesterday in connection with Centen- j [nial Hearing Week. At the request' of the headmaster (Mr. W. J. Melody)l a proper test was made today with the audiometer. i Those present included Miss R. ■Grant, teacher of the special speech' ! classes at the school, other teachers, Messrs. J. J. Ciark and C. H. Nicholls, representing the Wellington Education [ Board, Mr. G. E. Overton, representing the Education Department, Dr. E. i iGunn, Director of School Hygiene, Dr. jW. Macdonald, president, and Mrs. J. F. Nicholson, honorary secretary, ofj the Wellington branch of the League for the Hard of Hearing, and Miss M. Shutes, a member of the Auckland! branch. Mr. Melody said that the majority of the children at the school had normal hearing, bu there were special classes j for those who were hard of hearing j and children with speech defects. ] Dr. Gunn asked for a demonstration! of the audiometer to be given before the school, medical officers. Messrs. Clark and Nicholls spoke of the Education Board's interest in the problem with which the league dealing and undertook to report on the demonstration. Dr. Macdonald gave a brief description of the audiometer and said that by [the tests minor degrees of deafness were discovered at an early- stage, j which enabled prompt remedial action to be taken. Yesterday afternoon Miss M. Eggle-j ton (Wellington), a teache- of lip reading, gave a talk on "Helps for the Hard of Hearing." and this will be: repeated tonight. Last night Dr.; Hope-Robertson spoke on the selection I and use of hearing aids and the anatomy of the ear, and Mr. A. D. McKinlay gave a demonstration of hearing j aids. Tonight Mr. W. A. Sutherland, secretary of the Automobile Association (Wellington), will speak on driving and the effect of deafness on drivers.
