SUPERANNUATION AND WAR PENSIONS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Would you be good enough to inform me through your columns of a matter in connection with the national superannuation coming into force on April l, 1940. How is a war- widow affected, who is now receiving a war widow's pension of £1 10s per week, plus economic pension of 15s per week, a total of £2 5s per week. Is she now entitled to this £10 per year under the national superannuation or does the war pension count as being from social security? If the war widow is entitled to the £10 per year as from April 1, is she liable to have the economic pension reduced accordingly?—l am, etc., WAR WIDOW.

[The Social Security Department states: The fact that a person is in receipt of a war pension and an economic pension as the widow of a deceased soldier will not preclude her from obtaining the superannuation benefit which becomes payable from April 1, 1940, and the payment of the superannuation benefit of £10 a year would not cause a reduction in the amount of the economic pension unless the widow were possessed of other income in addition. Section 63 of the Social Security Act, 1938, makes special provision to enable payment of a superannuation benefit •to be paid concurrently with any pension or allowance payable under the War Pensions Act, 1915, or under the War Veterans' Allowance Act, 1935.]
