Twenty-first Birthday Party. A very pleasant evening party in honour of the twenty-first birthday of their eldest daughter, Kathleen, was given by Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Farquhar, Kelburn, on Tuesday in the rooms of the Lyceum Club. Those present included Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Barnes, Mrs. Hestei\ Misses Lois Farq'uhar, Gwen Earnshaw, Lois Laing, Marjorie Mul- ' ford, Joan La Roche, Audrey Hester, Mavis De Rouffinac, Joan Farquhar, Leila Farquhar, Pauline Hobbs, Nancy Pederson, and Messrs. Val Fairhall, J. Campagnola, lan Stevenson, Neville Smith, John Cleverdon, Graham Bryce, Rex Miller, and Max Hutton. Wadestown Mothers. The Wadestown branch of the League of Mothers held a meeting on Tuesday. In the absence of Mrs. Mac-kay,-the president, Mrs. Turner took the chair. Mrs. A. Mackay gave an interesting talk on her recent travels to New Guinea, the south of China, and Australia. Mrs. Wiren sang solos, and the choir also gave two enjoyable items. Tea for the Soldiers. A number of soldiers were entertained at a tea arranged by the ladies' auxiliary of the V.M.C.A. on Sunday night. Mr. H. W. McKenzie was in the chair and welcomed them to the

V.M.C.A. Mrs. W. Legge and Miss T. Sullivan sang a,duet and community singing was conducted by Mr. R. T. Wright, acocmpanied by Mrs. W. Legge at the piano. Tribute to Life Vice-president. The Brooklyn Women's Christian Temperance Union commenced its year's activities at a recent meeting in the Methodist Hall. Mrs. Reed, president, presided over a good attendance. Visitors welcomed included Ivirs. Squire, of Hawera, and Mrs. Anderson, Christchurch. Mrs. Brewer, district president, presented Mrs. Reed with a shoulder spray, in appreciation of her work. Mrs. Dudley read an extract from the eighty-sixth annual meeting of the United Kingdom Alliance, and stated that the University of London had conferred the degree of Ph.D. on Mr. G. B. Wilson, whose statistics on alcohol consumption were very well known. The report of the district executive held at Brooklyn, was given by Mrs. Sawden, and Mrs. Pearson gave an account of the work of the Wellington executive of the Bible-in-Schools' League. Mrs. Brewer was appointed delegate to the Dominion convention at Invercargill. "Frances Willard, Her Life and Work," was the subject of a talk given by Mrs. Brewer. Members volunteered to attend the temperance stall at the Ex-j hibition for a week, commencing March 18. A presentation was made to Mrs. Baudinet (life vice-president), who is leaving the district. Tribute was paid to her long record of service, and appreciation was expressed of her unfailing assistance and outstanding abilities as a speaker. Mrs. Sawden, in giving her a book and a bouquet, said Mrs. Baudinet held a unique place in the esteem and affections of all" who were associated with her. Tea was served by the Baptist ladies. The League at Johnsonville. The Johnsonville branch of the League of Mothers held its first meeting for 1940 recently when the president, Mrs. Robert Hogg, was in the chair. Miss Kershaw was the guest speaker, her subject being "Careers for Girls." She also interested the members with her account of an afternoon spent with Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson. Mrs. Liddle, on behalf of those present, thanked Miss Kershaw. The "thought for the month" was given by Mrs. Hooper, afternoon tea was served, songs were sung tiy Mesdames Wilman and McLennan, two numbers were rendered by the choir, and recitations were given by Mrs. Barrett. Traveller's Discourse. The first meeting oi' the year of • the Miramar branch of the League of Mothers was held recently in the Baptist Church, Mrs. G. Vance presiding over an excellent attendance of members and friends. An appeal was made for experienced knitters, to undertake the knitting of gloves and balaclavas for the soldiers, several members offering their services. The choir, under the leadership of Mrs. McKendry, with Mrs. Bary as accompanist, rendered two items, and Mrs. Horsfal, accompanied by Mrs. Appleton, sang two songs. Mrs. Wall, who has recently returned from a trip abroad, discoursed on impressions gained during her journey to and through America, and recounted several interesting incidents that befell her. The speaker was thanked and presented with a bouquet by Mrs. Fulton. The "thought for the month" was given by Mrs. Lan Fulton. Irish Singer Weds. The marriage recently took place at St. Michael's Church, Tilbury Road, London, with Nuptial Mass and Papal Blessing, of Mr. Gerard M. Peters, the Irish singer, only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Peters, of Gorey, Co. Wexford, and Wellington, and Miss Elizabeth Mary Kavanagh. youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Kavanagh, Rock Tavern, Co. Wexford, and sister of the Rev B. Kavanagh, P.P., Auckland, states "The Post's" representative. The best man was Pilot-Officer B McNamara (New Zealand), cousin of the bridegroom. The Rev. Father Cahill, P.P-, St. Michael's, officiated.

Ngaio Patriotic Committee. ' At the last. meeting of the Ngaio Patriotic Committee a large parcel of knitted goods was handed in and further wool was distributed. The main business was finalising arrangements for the social evening and dance to be tendered to Ngaio members of the Second Echelon. This will be held in the Ngaio Town Hall on Wednesday, March 27, at 8 p.m., and it is hoped that all residents of the district will be present to make this a very successful function. The "Shilling Appeal" week was also dsicussed, and the district is to be canvassed between March 29 and April 5. Further meetings will be held fortnighty to distribute wool and arrange for parcels to be sent overseas. The next meeting will be in the E.S.A. rooms on April 2. Tea for Melbourne Visitor. A pleasant afternoon party was given at James Smith's on Tuesday by Mrs. W. Harvey and Mrs. H. Cooper in honour of Mrs. Cameron Stewart, of Melbourne, who is visiting her sisters, Mrs. J. Leuchars and Mrs. E. Wilson, Wellington, after being separated for twenty-nine years. Mrs. R. McKeen gave a shoulder spray to Mrs. Stewart with best wishes from all present. Among the guests were Mesdames Savege, Recce, Hunt, Uren, Jackson, Foley, Jones, Rudman, Angel, J. Cooper, Leuchars, Wilson, R. Jackson, Harvey, and H. Cooper. , Institute's Ninth Birthday. Flowers were presented to each member and visitor who attended the recent annual meeting, and ninth birthday celebration of the Silverstream Women's Institute. Gifts were given the president, Mrs. J. A. Taylor, and Mesdames Spackman, Ferguson, Callingham, Hines, Smyrk, Eckersley, and McConkey for their work during the year. Mrs. O'Reilly received a gift for most regular attendance and four members' babies received Savings Bank books and boxes. Mrs. Heathcote, president of the Hutt Valley Federation, spoke, and later announced the new committee as follows: —President, Mrs. Taylor; committee, Mesdames Price, Shadbolt, Ritzema, Hannibel, Ferguson, Balfour, Spaekman, Richardson, Callingham, and Miss Moss. Visitors were received from other institutes in the federation and inspected the patriotic work done by the local branch combined with the Silverstream patriotic committee. Afternoon tea was served and the Mayoress of Upper Hutt cut the clock-shaped birthday cake. A talk was given by Miss Maddever and songs by Mrs. Jefcoate. Competitions were won by Mrs. Poole, Mrs. McGonagle, and Mrs. Futter, and Mrs. Hannibel won the "Sutherland tiki" for most points in arts and crafts competitions for the year, and prizes were also awarded Mrs. O'Reilly for cooking, and Mrs. Crosbie for the best bloom. Farewell Cocktail Party. A delightful cocktail party was given by Mrs. Hugh Jackson, Lower Hutt, at the Hotel Waterloo on Tuesday evening, the guest of honour being her son-in-law, Paymaster-Lieutenant Lloyd Davies, R.N.,. who was accompanied by Mrs. Davies. Paymaster-Lieutenant Davies left the same night for Auckland. Colourful and most decorative were large bowls of dahlias in the reception lounge. About sixty guests were received by Mrs. Jackson, who was wearing a black and white ensemble and hat to match. Mrs. Davies wore a smart black suit, with black hat and veil, and Miss Jackson was wearing a navy and white silk frock with a plain navy hat. Birthday Honoured. To celebrate the twenty-first birthday of their daughter Dorothy, an enjoyable sherry party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Victor Williamson, Kelburn, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A G. Williamson, Lyall Bay. Beautiful flowers were arranged in the re-ception-room, where the guests were received by the host and hostess, assisted by Mr, and Mrs. A. G. Williamson. The guests, who afterwards went on to the Exhibition Cabaret to dance, included Mr. and Mrs. A. Trevera, Mrs. Scott-Wood, Mr. and Mrs. S Rickard, Misses Stephane Pearce, Pauline Hobbs, Billie Littlejohn, Grace i Miller, Nola Miller, Olga Hutchins, Doris Younger, Hilda Stewart, Marie Dunbar, Edna Battersby, and Messrs. Douglas Williamson, Bernie Petrie, L. Hellier, George Sutherland, W. Priest, Wesley Foster, R. Wilson, L. Jones. N. Thompson, D. Marks,' R. Hunnley, and Boyd Beaver.
