THE NAZI HEEL

EFFECTS IN PRAGUE

AMERICAN'S EXPERIENCE

(Received January 25,. 9 a.m.)

NEW YORK, January 24,

Anthony Fiala, an American who was born in Czecho-Slovakia, returned from Europe in the liner Manhattan. His brother, a former Prague hotelkeeper, became speechless and insane as a result of Nazi torture. The effect on the mother of the brother's condition caused her deaths

"What I saw in Prague," said Fiala, "aroused me to volunteer in the Czech Legion in Paris, but I was rejected because I am an American. There are 20,000 imprisoned in Prague. M. Klofac, the former Defence Minister, died in prison from 'unknown causes.' Five thousand persons have been killed or have died as a result of maltreatment since the student massacre last October."

CREATING SERFS

NAZIS' CHOSEN TASK

(Received January 25, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, January 24. The Vatican broadcast denouncing conditions in Poland and the meeting of the National Cotmcil of Poland* in Paris, at which M. Paderewski, despite his age, delivered a speech which deeply moved his audience, are the subject of comment in the Press.

"The Times" says: "The fact that religious spirit was; uppermost at the Paris meeting is natural in a devout race which, in the words of President Racziewicz, has been invaded by two barbarians, both imbued with the spirit of paganism. It is indeed typical of the present tragedy of Poland^ and of civilisation itself that the most famous musician of the age should find himself making a speech in favour of the use of military banners and bayonets. But brute force has conquered Poland, and only brute force can expel the conqueror." The "Manchester Guardian" says: "The Vatican message must shake all those who still look on the struggle in Europe as a quarrel over rival interests which could be settled by,some kind of diplomatic bargain. . Germany has set out on a task not attempted in Europe for centuries—the enslavement of her neighbours. If she has her way the Polish nation and the Czech nation will be serf peoples. If eastern Europe falls under this new tyranny all that Christianity has won for liberty and the spirit of man will be lost."
