UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—May I reply to "Parent" regarding University entrance? The present troubles of the University of New Zealand are due largely to the deplorably low standard of the entrance examination —an examination that should be for determining the fitness for a candidate to enter the University, not his fitness as an office boy. A university is supposed to be a seat of higher learning. At present many of our undergrads (and grads) are incapable of writing decent English.

"Parent" suggests the Minister of Education should veto the proposed amendment to the v entrance system. This reminds one of that chancellor who, when he could not persuade the Senate to think as he did, went behind their back to the Minister. Anyone who knows the history., of the University of New Zealand will realise the damage that has been done by outside domination.

If "Parent" needs £150 per annum to support a child, he is not fit to be a parent. I could support two or three children on that amount.—l. am, etc.,

MOTHER OF FIVE,
