BENEFITS IN BRITAIN EXTENDED

LONDON, ■ January 24. , The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, announced in the House of Commons a scheme for greater pension benefits as follows: — 1. The grant of supplementary allowances payable by the Exchequer to pensioners accordingjto their needs, as the result of which local authorities will be relieved of an expenditure of £5,250,000 annually in assisting 275,000 needy pensioners. 2. Admission to a pension at the age of 60 instead of 65 of the wives of contributory pensioners aged 65 and over. 3. Reduction from 65 tb 60 of the pension age of insured women. 1 4. Contributions to the contributory! scheme are increased by 2d a week' for men and 3d a week for women. Employers will pay Id a week of this. The scheme affects 3,0010,000 oldage pensioners. The admission of women at 60 years of age puts 10s a week into the pockets of 150,000) spinsters.
