USE OF LICENCES

Details of the petrol rationing scheme to operate as from February 1 were announced last night by the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan). Summarised, they are: — The allowance for cars over 14£ h.p. ,will be twelve gallons a month, and for cars under that rating eight gallons. Coupons numbered 15 to 18 inclusive are to be used during February. Owners of cars essential to the conduct of a business may receive an additional 30 gallons a month during February for cars over 14J h.p., and 20 galjlons for cars under that rating. Semiessential cars are allowed twelve and eight gallons extra respectively. Holders of licences are asked to pre- | sent their licences on or after February 1 to the local oil fuel controller for ! amendment. All classes of motor-cycles are entitled to four gallons during February.

Trucks used by farmers and merchants 1 and others for the carriage of their own goods are to have their allocation reduced by a third. Special steps are being taken to effect substantial savings in petrol conjsumed by goods and passenger transport services licensed under the Transi port Licensing Act. Steps are being taken to effect a reduction of at least 20 per cent, in the petrol used by Government Departments, and local bodies are asked to co-operate to the same extent. Owners of private launches will be granted licences up to 50 per cent, of their normal consumption. Petrol for use in milking machines, farm tractors, and similar machines is not affected. No petrol will be allowed for. holiday tours, but motorists already- away will be allowed sufficient to get them home again. The Minister has arranged for a reduction of 20 per cent, in fares to operate during February from all stations to Wellington in the North Island and from* all stations to Lyttelton in the South Island. This is to assist people to visit the Centennial Exhibition. An extension of the period will be considered in February-
