NO SHAME SEEN

BLOCKADE OF GERMANY

CAMPAIGN TAKING EFFECT

FEEDING OF PEOPLE

(Received January 25, «2 p.m.) J LONDON, January 24. The Minister of Economic War-! fare, Mr. Cross, in a broadcast | speech, said: — ' "There is no shame in our blockade. There will be no starvation in Germany if the Nazis feed the people and not the guns. Relaxation of our economic attack would merely prolong the war and increase the loss of life. Germany is practically selfsufficient. If the Nazis use their plentiful foodstuffs for the people and do not choose to use fats for- the guns they will not, starve German women and children. "In addition to destroying' Germany's overseas trade,, we are giving European neutrals better prices than Germany, and they find it increasingly unprofitable to supply Germany. We have thus got as far as complete economic isolation of Germany. The immediate economic collapse of Germany is not expected, but there are solid signs that the campaign is taking effect." •• (Daventry Broadcast.) LONDON, Wednesday Night. Mr.. Cross gave several examples of the effect of contraband control on Germany. The use of the railways, he said, was restricted because of shortage of lubricating grease. Even in Germany lubricating oil for fighting craft was used for many hours longer than it would be used in Britain. Many textile factories had closed down, and others were working short time owing to lack of raw materials. A decree issued in Germany today by Field-Marshal Goering goes to confirm Mr. Cross's claim. The decree ordered engineers to check projects already begun, in an effort to find a means of saving steel. ( Field-Marshal Goering also ordered the greater use of wood wherever possible in place of steel in constructional work.

The people of Berlin have now been ordeVed to use less gas, according to a Belgian Hot water is already "rationed in many German towns to two days' a week.
