GERMANY WITHIN
WAR NOT WANTED
r REPORT BY AMERICAN
(By Air Mail, from "The Post's" London Representative.)
LONDON, November 24
Intense feeling against the Nazis1 was noticed by Mr. O. G. Villard, a distinguished American political writer, .who returned to London this week from a visit to Germany. He said that vi his several weeks' visit he met a greater number of people than he had ever before met in so short a time, including representative business^ men, bankers, and so on, and people of all classes. He was amazed at the- strength of feeling in Germany against the Nazis —indeed had found it difficult to meet anyone who was 100 per cent. Nazi. Among the workers with whom ne talked there was, with one exception, an immediate response of opposition to the Government and to the war.
But after working for some weeks h. London under an oppressive 'censorship he was surprised to find that a correspondent, provided he-, behaved himself and did not lie about the country or vilify officials, might send his stuff freely. In Prague, on> the other hand, he was personally conducted and every effort was made to prevent his seeing what he wanted to see most. The German people as a whqle were desperately discouraged, and he noticed among the troops travelling on the trains the same cheerlessness. ' The business men who knew the material resources of Germany said that England would be greatly mistaken if she thought she would soon win the war through Germany's rapid breakdown.
Mr. Villard believed that in Germany there was an intense longing for peace, and that the best way ~to attain vt would be for England to let the people know her war aims, her willingness 'o work for a new order in Europe, and her lack of any jealousy or desire Lo destroy Germany or-reduce her to a subordinate position.
