TRIPLE VICTORY
TOURNAMENT ENDS
Auckland made a clean sweep of the Centennial year New Zealand bowling titles by taking the singles, pairs, and fours to the northern city. G. A. Deare (Carlton) won the singles, W. Bremner (West End) the pairs, and F. Livingstone (Onehunga) the fours. The pairs and fours were played yesterday, both Bremner and Livingstone having easy victories in the final games. The tournament concluded yesterday afternoon in brilliant sunshine, and the final games were played at Thorndon, where the green was in beautiful condition. This tourney has proved an eminently successful Centennial year event. The arrangements worked smoothly under the direction of Mr. M. J. Casey, president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, and Mr. A. F. Spiller, secretary, who had with them an efficient committee of local members of the New Zealand Bowling Council. The army of umpires and other officials who took part contributed materially towards the success of the tournament. PAIRS FINAL. Yesterday's play provided interesting bowling. In the pairs final W. Bremner (West End, Auckland) defeated A. W. Cullen (Thorndon) by 25 to 17. Bremner had to burn the first head when Cullen lay two shots, and in the replay Bremner secured a single. He took a 2 on the second end, and conceded a single to Cullen on the third. Bremner 3-1.
The Auckland man carded a further 3 on the fourth end, and his lead drew four beauties on the next, Bremner adding another shot to capture a full hand for the end when Cullen missed his. drive and then just failed with his
last bowl to lift the jack. Bremner 11-1. ■. ' .
Cullen bagged a single on the seventh end, Bremner drawing second shot and saving a couple. " Donaldson was outleading Watson at this stage, and on the eighth end he planted a nest of three on his opponent. Cullen's first bowl rested in- for shot, but Bremner, with his first pushed him through for 1, and with his next the Aucklander trailed the white for a 4. Bremner 17-2.
Both the Auckland men1 were drawing with devastating, accuracy, and on the ninth end, when Watson placed a sitter on the kitty, Donaldson rested him through for shot, and Bremner drew two more perfect shots, thus putting him up 20-2 on the card. Bremner repeated his performance on the tenth end,, sending in an up shot to take out Cullen's two shots and take 3 for the end. 23-2. With heartbreaking consistency Bremner popped on another single on the eleventh end, drawing the shot around the head when Cullen dragged the white throughto lie 2.
Cullen sneaked. one on the twelfth with a lucky slide when Bremner lay a handy shot, but in the next Bremner came again and captured a single. Cullen scored one on the fourteenth and came to light with a 3 on the fifteenth when he brought off a nice rail for 3. 25-7.
Cullen reached double figures by carding a 3 on the sixteenth end. Bremner killed the next when the head lay against him, and,., in the replay Cullen notched a one by driving out Bremner's shot bowl, and took a f\xvther single on the eighteenth. The nineteenth saw Cullen's last chance go when he scored a single, whereas he needed them in lumps. The Thorndon skip had made his run too late, and a 4 on the twentieth end was of no use to him, the game ending at this stage, Bremner 25-17.
