STUD SHEEP SALE.

MASTERTON, January 17.

Although bidding, on the whole, was hard' to get, the sale in -Masterton today of stud Southdown and Romneys was a good one" for classy; animals, as evidenced by the 380gs, claimed -to be the highest price paid- in ah auction ring in New Zealand, for. a stud Romney ram received by the estate of the late Quentin Donald. The purchaser was J. C. Best, Hawera. Another high figure for a Romney was the 220gs paid by A. T. Hunter, Wanganui, for a ram offered on account of Sir Wil-liam-Perry, ...who-also receiyed-.2oDgs for another ram, the purchaser in this case being J. Grant, Waimate. The highest price for a Southdown was lOOgs, the seller being Sir William F_erry and the buyer C E, Vile, Bulls.

PAHIATUA.

The Associated Auctioneers report that more than 4000 sheep, mostly lambs, were yarded at the Pahiatua sale this week. Prices for the tops of the lambs were firm on those of last week, and small to mediums appreciated by Is to .Is 6d. The quality of the lambs was good, and black faces and shorn wethers were keenly sought. One draft of 400 Alfredton sheep realised 15s. Prices are:—Black face lambs, good, 18s to 14s 6d; medium, 14s to 12s; small, 11s to 9s 6d; woolly wether j lambs, good, 16s Id to 12s 6d; small to medium, lls to 7s; shorn wether lambs, good, 15s to 12s 6d; medium, 10s to 7s 3d; wethers,' two-tooths, 15s lid to 15s; ewe lambs, 16s 6d 'to 12s 9d; small, 8s to 5s 6d; wether lambs, small, 6s to 4s 9d. ADDINGTON MARKET. (By I'eleeraph —l"ress Association.' CHRISTCHURCH, January 17. The heaviest store sheep entry of the season was forward at today's Addington sale, about 6000 of the section being store lambs. The great stimulus given to fattening feed by the recent rains was reflected in a keen sale for rape lambs, which made up to 21s for three-quarter-bred wethers, with numerous pens from 16s 6d to 17s 9d. Better lambs were 2s 6d a head dearer than a week ago. Well-grown ewe lambs in forward condition sold from 19s to 19s 9d. Ffet lambs comprised an entry of 2000 and full schedules were paid and a fraction more. Butchers had to pay Bfdia lb to supply their needs.. . , '■ ■ Fat sheep numbered 5000. Best wethers sold at up to last week's- good rates, but heavy ewes and light and medium sorts were easier by up to 2s 6d. '■ Prime mediumweight ewes showed very little change and exporters were in the market for light sorts. Good wethers made 27s to 31s, tops to 345, medium 23s to 265; good ewes 21s to 245, tops to 27s 6d, medium 17s to 20s, ordinary 14s 6d to 16s; light-down to lls. ;■.■,• The-fat-cattle penning of 441 included a few good steers, and these, met a firm sale at last week's rates. Medium classes of steers and cows, which represented most; of the entry, were 10s a head cheaper. Good steers made from £16 to £18, tops to ■ £22, mediumweight and prime £13 to £16, light down to £10; good heifers £10 to £12,- tops to £13, light £7 to £8. Cows brought 15s a head less, the best making from £10 to £12 10s. In the fat pig section porkers were siightiy cheaper, -making 37s 6d to 52s 6d and an average a lb of 6£d.to 7d.
