5 FARMERS' REPRESENTATION
(Special to the "Evening Post.") ; CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The prices given to farmers for their wool under the Government appraisal and purchase system were discussed ' at a meeting of the executive-of the '- North Canterbury district of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. It was suggested that in farmers' interests there should be someone present to watch the appraisal of the wool on their be- -. half. This subject it was decided to ' discuss with stock and station auctioneers. Mr. A. M. Carpenter said that firms were now paid by the Government as • its representatives and buyers, and » whereas they previously represented /' the farmer they could not now represent both. It was felt by many farmers that they had no representation at the valuing and disposal of their wool,, and there was certainly a case ~ for questioning the prices given. Mr. Carpenter said that in one case a man's cotted wool was given a higher -. price than his main fleece wool, and - necks and pieces had been bought at only Jd alb less than fleece wool. If the farmer objected to'the price given ' him-an appeal had to be lodged within forty-eight hours, and the minimum Government fee was £2. It seemed that since the firms were paid by the Government and were servants of the Government the farmers were not now , represented. y , Mr. J. W. D. Hall said that the total - price for the farmers' wool was going ' to be a certain figure and the appraisal was to determine how the money should be distributed. The farmers as . a body'would not be losing, though' some would get less than others: ', , The president, Mr. I. L. M. Coop, said that the finer wools had gone up more than crossbred. • Mr. Hall: That may be a sop to the back-countryTf armers. Mr. Coop:- Yes, but at our expense. After further discussion it was de- -. cided to talk the .subject over with the auctioneers.
