Opened yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, the Karori Horticultural Society's Rose Show demonstrated'the skill of suburban horticulturists in raising choice flowers and vegetables. Roses, naturally, took pride of-place in the show, but there " : were" jnsny other beautiful early summer flowers such as sweet peas on the -show benches, and the succulent vegetables almost made the mouth water. -Flowers from the reserves' anti :'iropxfih& garden circle of this - .Tpwrisy^omen's Guild added to the show their.quota of colour and scent,. especially . fine being some antirrhinums. ;:The decorative classes were an outstanding fea.ture of,the show.. An interesting exhibit was a bowl of native flbwers, 15 "varieties in all, frdm i the garden of Mrs. G. J. J. Feil. ■■- ; ■?■>■.:. The following awards were made:—S". K. Porteous won the trophy ,bearing his ' name for six varieties of 'roses';' \V. F. Askwith won the Nathan Trophy for six blooms with foliage,' and .he . also, exhibited the champion 'rose, a "Una Wallace": and R. M. Porteous won. the G. S. ' Ni'coll.
