CROQUET NOTES

(By "Concentrate.")

Inter-club Matches.

Perfect weather favoured the fifth round of inter-club matches last Tuesday, when the lawns were almost perfect after the good soaking during previous days. Many excellent matches were played, prominent amongst which was that between Kelburn No.. 2 and Ngaroma. Mrs..yeitch, playing for the latter club, made a perfect all-round break. Another outstanding match was that.between Kelburn 1 and Central, both Mrs. Mathewson and Mrs. Chetwin playing exceedingly well. The former made a break of eleven; and the latter one of nine, giving the opponents. few opportunities to score. k In another match, Mrs. Pickard, playing for Ngaroma, made a good break of nine. " A progress report has been received from the secretary of the association, Mrs. E. McKenzie, and gives the position of the scores up to and including last week. It would appear that in the B 'grade, which has concluded, Ngaroma Club, with two wins this week, have secured the largest, number of points', and have thereby, won the shield for that section; ■ - - " The following are the; : number ■of points scored by the various clubs:— ■■-.;-■•. •.: :.••-■- A Grade. ■ ''* "'■■'. On account of the wet weather last week no half-team matches were play* cd. The following is. the draw for next week: —Seatoun v. Island Bay; Mt.. Victoria v. Johnsonville;. Hataitai v. Upper Hutt; Eastbourne v. Ngaroma; Ngaio, a bye. ' .-'•'. Pollock Stars. An excellent match was witnessed •when the Seatoun Club, represented. by Mesdames Small and Woodley>> challenged the J Hutt Club .for the Pollock Stars last - Saturday. The holders were Mesdames Bock and Kirk: At the commencement of the-game the long shooting was splendid by'all four players, and as a consequence each fids gained control alternately.

With all clips on the fourth hoop, Mrs** Kirk*-securing the play, went'"to first return. Mrs. Woodley here hit in, and, playing a perfect three-ball - break, carried her clip to rover, after which Mrs. Small went to the second return. At this stage the game was very interesting, as with two clips on rover and two on the second return, all players were playing cautiously. Both Mrs. Kirk and Mrs. Small soon advanced a few points, after which Mrs. Bock hit in and set for her partner, who in the next turn reached the peg. In the next turn Mrs. Bock made rover, but in endeavouring to peg out one ball and at the same time separate, did not get too close a shot and missed the roquet, letting in the Seatoun Club. Owing to an unfortunate- stroke, however, Mrs. Small missed the short roquet to the peg, and Hutt, again getting control, finished with a small margin of two points. Mrs. Bryan was? hi charge of the match. The lie:- on the list of challengers is the Waimarie Club. Association Ferns. - . . The Hutt Club representatives, Mrs. Stonehouse and Miss McKenzie, were successful in winning the Association Ferns from the Hataitai holders, Mesdames Jackson and Turner, in tha fourth round last week. Unfortunately, the weather was not" all 'that could be desired, and intermittent raiu fell throughout the game, •making conditions unpleasant and the lawns very heavy. At the commencement of the game the Hataitai pair -soon had the clips well advanced,- but their opponents, after'getting the' strength of the green, soon drew ahead and maintained the lead to finish 26-16^ The shooting by all four players "was excellent. Mrs. Winchcomb was th« referee. The next on the list*.of challengers is , the Karori Club. "" McKenzie Cups. ~ One of the best games, in this g-rada for the McKenzie Cups was- played on the Kelburn lawns last Friday.. -The Karori Club, represented by, Mesdamea j Tustin and Phillips, met' the holders, Mesdames Lawrence and Spiller. -.The weather was showery and the lawna heavy,, but despite these adverse ■conditions all four players played ;.welU the Kelburn pair particularly^ being very steady. The long shooting- by Mrs. Tustin -was excellent, and gained control for Karori on many -occasions. The game lasted only a comparatively short time, arid the ■.score ended 26-16 in favour of Kelhurh.. s Mrs. Spence was ■in charge of the. snatch. The. next on the list of challengers is the Woburn Club. /:-n-
