When the lorry he was backing into a sand pit on his father's farm at Matamata capsized and rolled down a fifty-foot bank, Phillip Thirwall, aged 23, married, farmer, was killed. His brother, Ronald, received a broken shoulder. A third occupant, Ronald Boyt, escaped with minor injuries.
