COLUMN A MILE LONG

According to a police estimate, 9000 or more cyclists left Christchurch today on a mystery bicycle hike to celebrate the centenary of cycling, organised in aid of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. . The reputation of Christchurch as a city of bicycles was fully justified- by the line of cyclists, extending from Carl ton Mill Bridge, in formation .six deep, to the Canterbury Museum, a distance of a mile. Thousands of spectators filled the rest of. the road, and traffic had to be stopped. - The line moved off 'at 9.30 a.m., headed by a St. John Ambulance. It arrived at New Brighton trotting grounds, taking about two* hours to pass a point on the route. Here various races were organised and a cavalcade of cycling, representing the development of the bicycle, was presented. ■■■.■.'■
