WAR MEASURES
HOLIDAYMAKERS STRANDED
(Special to the "Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. Over 80 holiday-makers were stranded at Ostend, Waiheke Island, for last night, because war measures do not permit craft tc use the eastern passages of the harbour after dark. Excursion steamers took over 600 people from Ostend, but were unable to return for the remainder, who were forced to remain on the island for the night. j Most of those affected were young people, and many of them did not have enough money left to pay for board and food. Some who had rented baches for the weekend had vacated them before going to the wharf and they were not all able to return to the baches for the night. A fev^ finally decided to sleep in the wharf shed. A small number of those stranded on the island engaged a launch to take them to the city. The others disconsolately went back by bus to Palm Beach, Onetangi, and Ostend to see what shelter they could find. Among those left was a man holding the keys for the offices where he is employed.
