PASSENGER SERVICES
EASTBOURNE REPORT
Reports on the land and wateV passenger services of the Eastbourne Borough Council, received at last night's meeting of the council, state that the restriction on petrol for private cars is expected to have an appreciable effect on the number of passengers travelling by bus and ferry. Damage was caused to the port bulwarks of the Cobar amidships, due to a fender on Day's Bay Wharf coming adrift. The fender, which had been placed to protect the ship in heavy ! weather, broke adrift in a heavy southerly sea and was pushed through the bulwarks. Damage was estimated at £6. During August the Muritai steamed 435 riiles as against 345 miles in August, 1938, and the Cobar 2010 miles as against 2040 miles. The fuel consumption per trip, on each vessel was less than in August of last year. The ferry traffic was much the same as for A igust, 1938, and the bus loading showed an increase. There is reported to be increasing movement at weekends, j Ferry receipts were about the same, but for the five months receipts were appropriately £230 higher than for the first five months of last year. During the past few days an increase of passengers has been noted, 'with the lesser number of private cars now running. An increase for the month and the five-month period in bus receipts is noted, which meets the increased expenditure. It is expected that expenditure will be fairly heavy in future months. The petrol restrictions are likely to result in more traffic for the, buses.
