RUGBY TRIALS
NO ALTERATION
MATCHES TO PROCEED
The New Zealand Rugby trials for next Wednesday afternoon and next Saturday afternoon are to be carried out as originally planned. This announcement was made yesterday afternoon by Mr. S. S. Dean when the council # of the New Zealand Rugby Union resumed its meeting after the players assembled in Wellington had been called together and the question of leave had been discussed with them. Mr. Dean said that, with very few j exceptions, all the players would be remaining in Wellington during next week. Mr. J. Prendeville raised the question whether, if the tour to South Africa did not eventuate, as according to present indications it probably would not, it would be possible to select from the trials a New Zealand team and publish it afterwards as the team which would have represented New Zealand but for the war. Mr. Dean said that that suggestion had been put to him. 'T don't think it should go on the records as a New Zealand team," said Mr; A. A. Adams. ■' Mr. Dean: I don't, either. Mr. J. H. Parker asked whether it would not be better to play one trial instead of two trials next Saturday. He suggested that it probably would ,be found during the week that quite a number of players were nursing injuries. Mr. E. McKenzie, the New Zealand selector, indicated , that' even with some further withdrawals, there would still be a sufficient number of players to carry out the original programme.
D. G. Barton (Wanganui) and C. A. Crossman (King Country) were appointed the captains of the teams in today's trial match.
