DEMAND FOR MUTTON

FEILDING, September 22. With a keen demand for practically all stock, prices were firm at the Feilding sale, held today, values consolidating at last week's levels. Fat Sheep.—The quality was good in the mutton entry and, with competition well up to last week's, all supplies were soon sold on a strong market. Extra prime wethers made 29s 4d to 29s 6d, second grade, 26s 3d to 27s 6d, light 22s 6d to 255; prime hoggets, 24s 9d to 27s 3d, average quality 21s lOd to 225, unfinished 17s 6d to 18s, extra prime ewes 24s 6d to 275, second quality 23s 6d to 23s 9d, light 19s 2d to 21s lOd, unfinished 12s to 18s 6d. Store Sheep.—A medium entry of store sheep, practically all of which were ewe and wether hoggets, sold briskly. The peak values were not up to those of last week, but average sorts sold at about the same level. Best ewe hoggets made 27s 6d to 29s 2d, good 25s to 275, smaller 20s to 24s 3d, inferior 13s 7d to 19s 6d; good, wether hoggets 17s 3d to 18s 9d, second grade 14s lOd to 16s Bd, inferior 10s 7d, small 12s lOd; shorn two-tooth wethers 12s. Store Cattle. —There was a heavy yarding of store cattle, but a good proportion of the station lines was only in fair condition. Prices, nevertheless, were firm. Good two-year A.A. steers made £6 to £6, 12s 6d, smaller £5 2s to £5 17s 6d; yearling A.A. steers £3 7s 6d to £5; three-year forwardconditioned A.A. steers £10; good twoyear Hereford steers £6 7s to £7 12s; small yearling A.A. heifers £2 15s; yearling Hereford steers, best £3 2s to £3 18s; others £2 8s to £3; empty Hereford heifers £5 10s; backward yearling Hereford heifers £2; Hereford cows £2 15s; A.A. cows £3 10s; forward Hereford cows £5; weaner Jersey heifers, good £3 13s to £3 19s, small £2 7s; works' cows, heavy £3 5s to £4 2s 6d, others £1 5s to £2 15s. Fat Cattle.—A strong demand for beef set in, with prices of up to £2 a 1001b for the best cow beef being fully maintained. The entry was in excellent condition. Prime A.A. heifers made £11 10s to £12 15s, second grade £8 15s to £10 10s, light £6 5s to £8 7s 6d; prime A.A. cows ,£lO 10s, medium to prime £8 15s to £10; lighter £6 10s to £8; ex-dairy cows £3 7s 6d to £5 15s, prime bullocks £12 to £13 10s, second grade £10 12s 6d to £11 10s* light £6 7s 6d to £8 12s 6d. Dairy Cattle.—^The market was not as strong as last week for the dairy stock, but the best sorts were well up to reserve figures. Best springing heifers made £9 10s to £10 15s, later calves £7 10s to £9, backward £4 to £6 10s; heifers in milk £2 to £3; select springing cows £10 10s to £12, others £5 5s to £8. ,»■ Pigs.—A heavier entry of pigs made good values. Small weaners made 8s to 14s, good 17s 6d to 19s 6$ slips 22s 8d; stores, best -27s 6d~to 31s 6d; small porkers 33s 6d to 35s 6d. '. ' - . Poultry prices are:—Hens 4s to ss; cokerels 2s to 2s 4d; ducks- 2s 4d to Bs.
