STORAGE OF PETROL

REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACT

Where a person has more than eight gallons of petrol stored he is required to take out a licence. Attention to this regulation was drawn yesterday by tha Oil Fuel Controller (Mr. G. L. Laurenson), who said that it had come under his notice that prior to the operation of the emergency regulations, a number of persons secured stocks of petrol as a reserve supply, and that this petrol was being stored in drums and other containers under conditions which did not comply with the safety.regulations under the Explosive and Dangerous Goods Act and without licence under that Act,

It was therefore notified for public information that it was necessary for a licence to be taken out where more than eight gallons of petrol were stored. This licence was obtainable from the local authority in the case of boroughs and town districts, and from the chief inspector of explosives, Wellington, where the petrol was stored in country areas. '

The Act provides that in the event of a prosecution for storage of petrol without licence, all stocks and their containers are automatically forfeited on a conviction being recorded;! so that persons storing petrol in the manner indicated would be well advised to apply for a licence immediately, Mr. Laurenson said.
