HARRIERS
ST. ANDREW'S TROPHY
Eight members of the Wellington Presbyterian Harrier Club went to Auckland at the weekend to contest the St. Andrew's Trophy with the Christchurch and Auckland clubs. The course was a strenuous one of 6£ miles, combining hill and road work with many very swampy fields. The weather conditions were good, but rather hot for the southern visitors. The Auckland champion, J. I. B. Neil, led most of the way, and won the race for the fourth successive time. He led W. S. Hewitt (Christchurch) home by 300 yards, with I. Turner, Auckland, third. The results were:—Auckland (Ist, 3rd, 4th, 12th), 20 points, 1; Christchurch (2nd, sth, 10th, 11th), 28 points, 2; Wellington (6th, 7th, Bth, 9th), 30 points, 3. It is interesting to note that Wellington, the first club to have its four men home, was last, while Auckland won'the trophy in spite of being the last team to finish completely. Some interesting contests for places were seen. S. Campbell and C. Seelye, sixth and seventh respectively, were the leading Wellingtonians.
A conference of representatives decided to recommend to the respective clubs that next year's race be held on the King's Birthday (Monday) at Christchurch, after competition in the Christchurch-Akaroa Road relay race (open to all harrier clubs in the Dominion) on the Saturday. . This will be subject to international conditions.
The following will represent the club in the Bennett Memorial road race on. Saturday:—A team, C. Seelye, S. Campbell, A. Congalton, S. Hay, R. Tait, H. Walls; B team, R. Seelye, W. Ince, M. Stephenson, H. Miller, M. Pumfrey, N. Jardine. A third team will be entered if possible.
