HUTT VALLEY NEWS

FLOWERS AND MUSIC

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

Music and flowers were the attractive subjects featured yesterday at the September meeting of the MoeraWaiwhetu branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs. E. G. Hayton presided over the large attendance. Seven new members were admitted to the branch.

A musical entertainment was presented by twenty members of the Petone League of Mothers' choir, their comprehensive repertoire including Viennese waltzes, the barcarolle from the "Tales of Hoffman," and several old English lyrics, and glees. The choir was conducted by Mrs. M. Coleman and Mrs. J. Palliser played the accompaniments. A bracket of mezzo-soprano solos was given by Mrs. G. R. Millward, accompanied by Mrs. M. Boyd, and several elocutionary items were contributed by Mrs. M. Miller. After the tea interval Mrs. H. D. Kersley gave an instructive address on "Floral Decorations," which was followed with close interest. Mrs. Kersley, who has an outstanding flair for the arrangement of flowers, illustrated her talk with charming displays of blooms arranged in vases, bowls, plates, sand bowls, posies, and bouquets. A warm vote of thanks was accorded the speaker after her lecture had been extended several times at the request of the enthusiastic audience. Croquet Section "At Home." The final bridge and "500" evening in a successful series held by the croquet section of the Lower Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club throughout the winter months, took place last night in the cosy pavilion of the club. Despite- the boisterous weather over forty players were present and the big hall, attractively decorated with tall stands of sulphur-tinted wattle, presented a very cheery picture. Four hostesses, Mesdames H. Brooks, Earl MacKenzie, Parkin, and Lyford, looked after the comfort of the players and were also responsible for the serving of supper.
