MINERS IN THE WAIKATO
ELDERLY MAN'S DISMISSAL
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, August 27
The 400 men who work at the MacDonald and Glen Afton coal mines have decided to follow an order posted during this weekend by Mr. T. Hall, secretary to the Northern Miners' Union, that "till further notice, there will be no work for members of the Glen Afton and Mac Donald branches of the union on and after Monday, August 28."
The action follows the deadlock over the dismissal of a 76-year-old man three weeks ago. This will be the second strike within three weeks at these two mines and for the same reason. The management considered that the man was no longer capable of carrying out his duties efficiently and that the Social Security Act would well provide for him. Three weeks ago the men ceased work but. after two days of idleness, they decided to return to work and leave negotiations with the union executive.
The negotiations have apparently failed.
