SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
At a meeting of the executive council of the Wellington Symphony Orchestra this week, Mrs. E. M. Knox Gilmer, the newly-elected president, was in the chair. Satisfactory financial reports were received regarding the successful second concert for the 1939 season held recently.
A number of congratulatory messages were received from distinguished members of the audience, indicating the pleasure given and general appreciation of the fine performance by the orchestra under the baton of Mr. Leon de Mauny.
The enrolment of six new subscribing members was reported. It was decided that in. future longer notice be given to subscribing members of the dates fixed for concerts.
The secretary reported on correspondence with the newly-formed Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and the executive council expressed willingness to lend its assistance to the Auckland Society in connection with matters of mutual interest where cooperation would be of value.
Preliminary arrangements were made for the third concert of the season, and as this will be partly in the nature of a contribution by the society to the centennial celebrations and the itms will take the form of a "request" programme, it is anticipated that considerable interest .will be stimulated.
Tentative proposals regarding an orchestral or promenade concert to be given in "festival week" next, June were received, and will be discussed more fully when definite arrangements are known.
The council will meet in three weeks time to arrange matters in connection with the third concert, to be held on Tuesday, November 14.
