CRICKET

KARORI CLUB

"Made noteworthy in the first place by the im_ roved performances of our senior eleven and in tne second place by the visit at Easter of the North Shore team from Auckland, the past season saw the club further consoliI date its position," states the annual I report ;of the Karori Cricket Club. "We had another successful season, socially and financially; we greatly improved-s facilities at. Karori Park, including a splendid new Scoreboard, and generally we were able to offer our members and our supporters an excellent season's cricket. "Though we have overcome most of our immediate problems we are still faced with two urgent needs. The first of these is the need to provide, our members with a clubroom which, with i a new pavilion, will complete require-; ments at Karori Park as far as accommodation goes. The second is our need for another wicket at Karori on which at least second grade cricket! can be played. At present the senior wicket is required almost every week with the result that our second team is ! away from home the whole season and the players do not obtain any of the facilities obtained regularly by the remaining members whose travelling is bad enough but not so serious as in the second grade. "We intend to suggest to the association that it might be possible to institute a zoning system in the lower grades to minimise travelling distances and this could also be a first step towards the eventual district cricket scheme." For the third successive year, the report adds, the club fielded eight teams. This number could have been increased had grounds been available. Again the club took third place in the club championship, and the junior E team won its championship. Owing to the lack of numbers it I was found impracticable to continue Saturday morning matches, but • the club continued coaching boys whenever possible. The club also provided [ free games each Saturday afternoon i for two boys of promise. Efforts to link up Karori residents under an honorary membership scheme continued to be reasonably successful. I The finances of the club are in a 1 good shape. The annual meeting will be held at the Parish Hall, Karori, on Tuesday, August 29.
