BOYS' INSTITUTE

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the management committee of the Boys' Institute, held on Monday evening in the Institute Building, Tasman Street, was presided over' by Mr. J. D. Howitt. chairman. The director's report drew attention to the valuable services which were rendered by the voluntary staff and by Mr. A. A. Tuely in conducting the various evening activities. From Monday at noon until. 10 o'clock on Saturday evenings the gymnasium, games room, and the room used for boxing and wrestling had been filled to capacity. Interest in Association football had been greatly strengthened by the coaching given the boys by Mr. R. Sheffield, and the thanks of the institute were due to the Football Association for placing Mr. Sheffield's services at the disposal of the_ institute in this connection. Association football provided eight teams of boys with a game of football every Saturday from 9 till 11 a.m., two grounds at Hataitai Park being in use for their 'matches. In addition, fourth, fifth, and sixth division teams played in the Saturday afternoon competitions. The Institute Old Boys' Association Football Club caters for a first B division team (winners of the first B divi- ! sion championship with promotion to the first A division next season), second A division, and a third division team. Rugby football is provided for the residents, who have a team playing in the afternoon in the fifth division: and the Old Boys' Rugby Club fields a team in the junior second division each Saturday afternoon. j In spite of the prevalence of colds , and influenza the band practices had' been- well attended throughout the month and much interest was being J shown by members in the coming Can- i tennial contest.Mr. W.
