COMPETITIONS CONCERT
THREE HALLS BUSY
Junior competitors provided the lion's share of the entertaining evening concert programme staged by the Wellington Competitions Society in the Town Hall last night. Recalls j were judged in vocal, dancing, and in—j strumental classes. A further batch of contestants in the Dame Nellie Melba Bequest Scholarship section were heard by the judge in the Concert Chamber, and the elocution judge was occupied in the Thespian Hall with four senior classes, in all of which the final placings were made. The takings again showed an increase compared with the corresponding day last year. Further classes judged, yesterday resulted as follows:— Dance Duo, under 9 years (15 entries) .—Recalls: Joan Mason and Pam Connolly (Wellington), Pauline Bierman and Arnol Bircham (Brooklyn). Very highly commended: Dorothy Jenness and Dawn Lucas (Lower Hutt), Georgina Thomas and Betty Sines (Wellington). Highly commended: Dawn Sargent and Audrey Flitcroft (Wellington), Jocelyn Ring and Ellise Thomas (Wellington). (Recalls will be heard tonight.) Men's Scottish Folk Song (16 entries).—Mr. R. ■M. Algar (Glen Oroua). 84 points, 1; Mr. Keith Priscott (Hamilton), 83 points/ 2. Highly commended: Mr. Gordon Mackay (Khandallah). Mr. Ernest Gardner (Wadestown). Mr. James E. Bunker (Kelburn), Mr. W. Clothier (Napier). Men's Popular Song Hit, Grace Moore Cup (8 entries).—Mr. C. W Sherriffs (Ashhurst), 84 points. 1; Mr. Keith Priscott (Hamilton). 83 points, 2. Highly commended: Mr. Alfred Hawkins (Wellington). Song in Character, boy or girl, 7-9 years and 7 and under 9.—-Two recalls: Gae Cousins (Hataitai), 97 points, 1; Mary Buckingham (Hastings), 96 points. 2. Mr. Moss said this was quite a pleasant section and that the little tots gave some neat performances. The winner was very dainty and had an attractive, tuneful voice, The competitor placed second was not so good at the recall, having a slight lapse of memory. Women's Recitation. "Had Sappho Lived" (Ethel Clifford) (10 entries).— Miss Nell Warren (Wellington), 84 points, 1; Miss Eirene Halber (Gisborne), 81 points, 2; Miss Shirley King (Lyall Bay), 80 points, 3. Very highly commended: Miss Jean Cramp (Onehunga). "Some of the competitors in this section were inclined to be a little too vocal," said the judge, Mr. J. R. Lester, and were not quite successful with the poignancy and intensity of feeling that the poem required. The winner gave an evenly sustained performance and did justice to the poet's craftsmanship. Men's Recitation. "The Tragedy of the Great War" (the Hon. H. A. L. Fisher, F.R.S.) (six entries).—Mr. Ronald Wakelin (Hataitai), 84 points, 1; Mr. Richard Burgess (Lower Hutt), 82 points, 2; Mr. J. B. McNeill (Christchurch), 80 points, 3. Very highly commended: Mr. Gordon Hooper (Miramar), Mr. Alan Q. Bruce (Wellington). Katherine Mansfield Recitation (17 entries). —Miss Eirene Halbert (Gisborne), 86 points, 1; Miss Ailsa Ramsden (Petone), 85 points, 2; Mr. Richard Burgess (Lower Hutt), 80 points, 3. Very highly commended: Miss Ruby Cheyne (Eastbourne), Miss Nell Warren (Wellington). "The winner delivered these lines as though she had written them herself," said Mr. Lester. "There was naturalness and spontaneity about her work, and she succeeded with the imagery and word pictures of the poem. The performances of the winners of both first and second prizes were marked by ease and charm of delivery and by the manner in which they reproduced the joyousness and ecstasy of the poem." Men's Shakespearean Recitation, Open, Second Part of King Henry IV, Act IV, Scene 111 (five entries) .—Mr. R. Wakelin (Hataitai), 84 points, 1: Mr. Gordon Windsor (Wellington), 78 points, 2; Mr. Richard Burgess (Lower Hutt), 77 points, 3. Girls' Humorous Recitation, 12-16 years (2.1 entries).—Recalls: Shirley Austin-Turtle (Wellington), Valeric McCombe (Hastings); Cavel Trask. Napier. 3. Very highly commended: Lois Boyes (Nelson), Violet Compton (Kilbirnie), Colleen Walling (Wellington). (Recalls will be heard on Friday night.) Boys' Recitation, Restricted, 7-12 years (14 entries).—Kenneth Nottingham (Lower Hutt), 75pts, 1; Gi*ahame Cody (Ngaio), 73pts, 2; Tom Quayle (Wellington), 72pts, 3. Very highly commended: Howard Smith (Upper Hutt). Highly commended: Teddy Walsh (Wellington). Piano Solo, 12 and under 14 years. "Canzonetta" (Iris de Cairos-Rigo) (15 entries).—Vivienne Bognuda (Wellington). 78pts, 1; Susanne Holford (Karori), 74pts, 2. Chas. Begg and Co.'s Piano Scholarship, 13 and under 16 years (17 entries). —Recalls: Moira Ross (Lower Hutt), Lola Staub (Brooklyn). Very highly commended: Vivienne Bognuda (Wellington), Patricia Waters (Hataitai), Iris Bloomfield (Berhampore). Highly commended: Mavis Hartley (Palmerston North). Commended: Shirley Austin-Turtle (Wellington), Margaret Lampard (Lower Hutt), Alice Tunley (Lower Hutt). (Recalls will be heard tonight.) Chief Piano Solo Amateurs over 16 years (two recalls). —Miss A. Smith (Wellington), 259pts, 1; Miss Ngaere Highet (Hataitai). 158pts, 2. The judge, Mr. Eric Moss, said this was a good class. The winner gave two good performances of test and own selection. For her own selection she chose a difficult number and played it very well. The second prize-winner unfortunately made a bad lapse in the evening performance. Piano duet, 12 and under 16 years. Two recalls.—Joan Taylor and Patricia Waters (Wellington), 77 points, 1; Mavis Hartley and Julanne Perrin (Palmerston North), 76 points, 2. Mr. Moss said it was a very interesting class, and that the winners gave a very good rendering. Balance and rhythm were good and there was sympathy between the players. Boy's solo song and dance, under 16 years (14 entries).—Recalls: Alan Van (Wellington), Billy Goodfellow (Lower Hutt). Highly commended: Arnol Bircham (Brooklyn). Ralph Wilkin (Wellington). points, 2. Miss Kerr said it was a very good class —one of the best she had judged so far in the competitions. Skipping dance, 10-12 years, 10 and under 12. Two recalls.—Jean Alexander (Lower Hutt), 82 points, 1; Audrey Young (Wellington), 82 points, 2. Some very good work was done in the skipping-rope class, said Miss Kerr. In most cases the handling of the ropes was very good. Competitors should be careful not to make the skipping-rope jerky. It was announced yesterday that Miss Eirene Halbert. Gisborne, had been placed first in the radio voice test, which was judged by officers of the National Broadcasting Service with the assistance of the equipment of 2YA on Monday, and Miss N. Myers, Wellington, second. The complete awards were not available yesterday.
