KAIPARA HOSPITALS
NEW POLICY ADOPTED
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DARGAVILLE, This Day. Adopting the recommendation of the Inspector-General of Hospitals, Dr. Paget, the Kaipara Hospital Board at its monthly meeting decided that the Paparoa institution will in future be registered as a maternity hospital, also that a small—two-bed—ward will be available for other emergency cases. All other cases will be sent to the Te Kopuru institution. The board also agreed to a suggestion that one ward shall be retained for Maori mothers, separate from European mothers.
Dr. C. D. Gilberd, Medical Officer of Health, supporting the change, said he was sure that Maori mothers would appreciate haying a ward for themselves. In the four months since social security came into force 59 cases had been admitted to hospital, compared with 61 for the twelve months before. About half this year's patients were Maori women who came to the hospital without making prior reservations.
The board authorised the calling of tenders for the erection of a 20,000-gallon water cistern at the hospital in the hope of obviating the difficulties experienced last summer when the instutition was very short of water.
