EXCELLENT FIELDS

PROSPECTS AT PAKURANGA

The northern owner-trainer W. H. Maria has three horses in work for the spring meetings. They are Eastern Heir, Airam, and Pantheist, only Airam being, engaged at Pakuranga tomorrow.

Considering his busy season. Eastern Heir has freshened up well with a brief spell, and he is carrying plenty of bloom. The Buzzard gelding won three, races last season, and he gave the impression that staying would be his forte, so something better may be expected of him as a four-year-old this racing year.

In the past season Airam recorded four wins and nine - placings, and in a limited period of racing over hurdles proved herself one of the most promising iumpers seen out for a long time. She looks in great fettle and, as she has been removed from the barrier schooling list, she will be a -candidate for some of the early spring handicaps. The three-year-old filly Pantheist has not grown a great deal and is still on the small side. . She was a winner last season at Tauranga, but vNhe form was not very impressive.

(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, This Day. J The first race meeting in the city ■ i since. the Great Northern Steeple- \ ' chase fixture nearly three months ago :j will be the Pakuranga Hunt Club's;] ■ Annual Meeting at EUerslie tomor- i ' row. With a little more size j Saint Musk might be a dangerous op- ; ponent, for in his small compact frame i are jumping ability and rare courage, -i Biform. En Tour,, Wykemist, GadgerJ j Mahala/ London, Boyal Nation, and: ; Smiling Thru' Jiave the necessary credentials on form this winter, and so it may prove to be quite an interest-; ling contest, quite apart from the: ! dominating factor of Bridegroom. j OPEN FLAT EVENTS. ■ There has been a disposition to lav- , our Jack Tar in the principal flat event, the'Jellicoe Handicap, run over a mile, for he won over this distance at Trentham six weeks back. His j form at Ellerslie has also been good.' Valmint and Maori Song .will run him i close, for both are fit, and they should j prove better performers at £JiersH>e> than they did at Trentham. Royal: Bachelor is likely to run a -solid mile under the conditions, and Besiege,! Marie's Acre, Erndale, Jayola, and: Black Musk will be racing over a1 distance that will assist them. . -| The sprint, the Admiralty Handicap,! has a bunch of good winter gallop- ] ers engaged. Erndale, who is also in the Jellieoe Handicap, might be the; one if reserved for this, and Prince Acre (placed at Trentham) and Whirling are other good possibilities. Bach-? elor King Gay Setoa.
