PENAL SENTENCE

DRIVER GETS SIX MONTHS

TEN YEARS' PROSCRIPTION

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, August 14,

"There are your interests and the public interest to consider, and the public interest is paramount. Sentence must be one that will act as a deterrent, and show clearly that the Courts will not tolerate conduct which leads to slaughter of citizens. On the charge of negligently driving a motor vehicle, causing death, you will be sentenced to six months' hard labour, and for failing to stop after an accident you will be sentenced to two months' hard labour, the sentences to be concurrent. Your licence will be suspended, and you will be prohibited from driving for ten years."

With these words Mr. Justice Smith passed sentence in the Supreme Court this morning on Charles Archibald Riseley, aged 26, who pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to a charge , of negligent driving on August 5, thereby causing the death of Arthur Sydney Harper; also to failing to stop after an accident involving injury.
