INVERCARGILL, August 13

The heaviest fall of snow for the last thirteen years occurred in Invercargill on Friday night, the city having a covering of about 4in at daybreak yesterday. A further 2in fell during the morning and conditions continued wintry throughout the weekend, a keen westerly wind springing up last night. Further snow and hail fell today, and the city is still covered with a white coating.
