PETONE V. ATHLETIC
Although Pollock was an absentee owing tt> an injury to his thumb, Petone. in their match against Athletic, proved superior in all departments, and on the run of play their margin could have been bigger than 6 points to 3. but luck did not attend them. The first spell was ragged, though hard and many promising moves failed through bad passing, thoughtless kicking, and a lack of combination. In the second half tin Petone combination worked more smoothly, and with the backs responding to the excellent forward play, the Athletic men got plenty ot defensive work to do. In the scrums and out In the open Athletic were quite outplayed, and some of the backs were diffident about stopping rushes. Petono's first try, scored by Knowles. resulted from a good opening b.\ O'Halloran and Jones. The second one came after Jones attempted a pot at goal and missed. Dougan grasped his opportunity and beat the Athletic men to the touch. Athletics points were the result of a magnificent penalty goal by Auld from half-way.
Mr A Hooper was the referee.
