AIRLINER ON FIRE
OCCUPANTS ESCAPE
TRIBUTE TO THE CAPTAIN
(Received August 12, 9.30 a.m.)
LONDON, August 11
A British Airways liner made a forced landing at Luxeuil after catching fire at an altitude of 3000 feet. The crew and the nine passengers escaped.
A correspondent of the British United Press says that five British men and four women passengers owed their lives to the resource of the pilot, Captain D. Prowse, of Heston. Nobody panicked, and though the flames enwrapped the cockpit and penetrated the cabin the passengers remained seated. Captain Prowse put the machine on a steep dive and landed in a field at 120 miles an hour, smashing the undercarriage. The crew jumped out and handed the passengers to safety. All the baggage was burned.
