DAY IN PARLIAMENT
REPUDIATION ISSUE
Expectancy was evident from the outset when the House of Representatives sat yesterday. On the previous night the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes (National, Hurunui) had accelerated the pace of the Financial Debate suddenly by the presentation of the Opposition amendment seeking a clear statement of the Government's attitude on the question of repudiation of overseas indebtedness, following the speech on Wednesday night of Mr. J. A. Lee (Government, Grey Lynn). Within a few minutes of the House meeting the Deputy Leader ox the House (the Hon. P. Fraser) took up the challenge and in no uncertain way he scouted all suggestion that the Government contemplated default, -at the same time charging the Opposition with having raised the .issue merely for party purposes. There followed an animated debate on party lines, which lasted until the House rose at 4.55 p.m. Keen interest, was displayed in the speech of Mr. Lee on the amendment, and his personal views on the indebtedness of the Dominion and the debt system generally were given close attention. There was only one possible verdict on the amendment, which was put to the House shortly after Mr. Lee resumed his seat and was rejected on a party vote by 39 to 21.
