GEAR ISLAND
GOLF CLUB'S LEASE
A deputation from the Shandon Golf Club consisting of Dr. D. N. Isaacs, president, Mr. P. J. Burke, club captain, and Mr. R. G. Hay wood, hon. treasurer, waited on the Hutt River Board yesterday to ask the board to formulate the terms on which the board would grant its promised extension of the club's lease over a large portion of Gear Island. Dr. Isaacs said the club had always received and highly appreciated the utmost courtesy from the board, but it was somewhat concerned over the discussions which had recently taken place regarding Gear Island. Some members were afraid that the club's tenure might be affected, and were inclined to leave the club, and new members were not coming forward. The club's income was being affected.
Dr. B. J. Dudley, chairman of the board, assured the deputation that there would be no possible backing down by the board on its promise to grant an extension of the lease for a further five years.
Dr. Isaacs said the assurance would be welcomed by the club. The club would be prepared to pay £450 per annum for the extended period of its lease. At present it was paying £397. net.
After the deputation had retired the board discussed the club's offer, and considered that the board would need £500 per annum to give it a fair return for the area.
It was decided to oiler Uic club a lease till December, 1945. for £500 per annum.
