THE PETROL TAX

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —During the last three years the Government has taken over from private operators some 200 motor lorries, which were alleged to be in competition with the railways. Those private operators paid various taxes, including petrol tax. Now that they are out of business, it would appear the extra 4d per gallon will have to make up the loss in revenue from, that particular source. It would also be interesting to know how many private passenger services have been taken over by the Government with consequent loss of taxation revenue. —I am, etc.,
