COST OF RECRUITING

MR. SEMPLE'S VISIT

OPPOSITION ALLEGATION

An allegation that 800 men were paid overtime to listen to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) address them on recruiting at Temuka, was made in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. J. Hargest (National, Awarua). The men had to be transported to the meeting, he added.

Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (National, Riccarton): Are you sure?

Mr. Hargest: Yes; and it cost nothing less than £300 to allow these men to listen to the Minister address them. v

An Opposition member: Was supper provided? Mr. Hargest: No. They probably had such a feast from the Minister that they were satisfied. This statement was denied by Mr. E. P. Meachen (Government, Marlborough) later in the evening. He said that it was absolutely incorrect, and that the Minister would no doubt reply to it early next week.
