AWAPUNI TRIALS
QUADROON'S FAST SPRINT
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day. The frost was still on the ground when training operations were conducted at Awapuni yesterday morning, and the horses were going into the ground quite a lot. A Marton candidate to give a good account of himself was Quadroon, who will be ridden by C. G. Goulsbro'. The early workers were not asked to go against the watch, and those let ofl with light-tasks were Disdain, Malik Kafur, La jpru, Laughing Lass, The Bigot, The Buzzer, Colonel Bogey (who is to be given a let-up for two months), Beaupartir, Tidewaiter, and Vesty, though the last-named was given strong pace work. HanCver ran five furlongs in even time, and Rollaway was given a similar task. Onahau sprinted three furlongs in 40 3-ssec, and Royal Choice and Snigger half a mile in 56sec, the last three in 42sec. La Coquette, with a companion, covered three furlongs in 40 2-ssec andi Evening Glow came home from the five furlongs peg in Imin 17sec. Sporting Gift slipped over five furlongs, the little fellow never being off the bit in covering the distance in Imin 13 l-ssec. ' A smart three furlongs sprint was recorded by Girl Pat and Parian, the pair, under their light weights, cutting the distance out in 40sec. Debretts was held to even time over half a mile, and Golden Ridge and Pit Mark were not under pressure to record Imin 12sec for five furlongs. Catalogue and Raeburn galloped six furlongs, and, after running the initial furlong in 15sec, they gradually increased the pace to reach the three furlongs peg in 42Jsec. From there on they maintained the pace, finishing on terms in Imin 24 2-ssec. Quadroon sprinted five furlongs with Moradabad, being a couple of lengths to the good and going strongly when the post was reached in Imin 10 2-5 sec, the last three in 42 4-ssec. Peach King was not'under pressure to record 40sec for three furlongs. Five furlongs may be a bit short for him at Marton, but he is very well at preAmyas Leigh headed Laughing Chief at the finish of five furlongs in Imin lUsec. It was quite an attractive effort, and he is to have his first race at Marton. Power Chief and Manawatu were together throughout in a gallop of a mile, and they finished strongly to complete in 2min lisec. Additional riding engagements for Marton are as under:—W. J.
