TELEGRAPH FRAUD
. OFFICER DISMISSED
BRIBED TO ADD RACE WINNER
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WHANGAEEI, July 3.
In court today Harry Stockwell; William Martin, and William White were charged with conspiracy against George Mau, Rotorua.
Stockwell and Martin induced White, who was relieving at the Kaiwaka
Post Office, to mark fraudulently a telegram, so as to lead Mau to believe it was received for transmission at a time other than when it was received. Martin, on hearing the result of a race at Wellington, got White to add a request for a bet on the winner to a telegram previously handed in for dispatch to Mau. White repented when Martin left the office, and intended not tc send the telegram, but, fearing that Martin would report him for having accepted £5, he sent the message. Mau became suspicious and offered to pay half Martin's winnings, amounting to about £170. The men demanded the full amount, which led to the discovery of the plot. White, with 155 years' exemplary service to his craiit, was dismissed from the Telegraph Department. The Magistrate fined Martin £25, Stockwell £20, and White £5.
