RUGBY FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON UNION

DIAMOND JUBILEE

TO BE CELEBRATED

Mention of the fact that this year represented the diamond jubilee of the Wellington Rugby Union was made by the chairman (Mr. J. N. Millard) j at a meeting of the management committee of the union last night. He said that the fiftieth anniversary of the union had been celebrated in a very fitting manner, but he did not think it was necessary to do as much this season. "I thought we might make one of ■ the representative games an entertainment for old players—old Wellington representative players— and have a function after the game in the grandstand." he said. "We could ask some of the prominent old players to say a few words."

th^J? 1}5 rd SaJ d c certainly thought ihey should mark the occasion in some way, and, at the same time, he thought ti^Jr 0 be a suitable occasion to bring toe Rugby Annual up to date. They had not printed an annual since 1930, and they must be prepared to lose a considerable amount of money on it. al necessary to do it every now ana then to keep their records. Any other functions could be considered at a later date.

Mr. H. D. Morgan: Will this day be over and above our special "Old Timers'" Day? Mr. Millard: No. I think we should make this "Old Timers'" Day. We can make it the occasion of one of the representative fixtures.

Several suggestions as to a suitable date were made, but nothing definite was decided.

The Wairarapa Union advised that it agreed to August 19 as the date for the, Wairarapa v. Wellington junior representative game in the Wairarapa. The matter was referred to the junior advisory committee. It was also decidedf to advise the junior advisory committee that the Manawatu Union would be glad to send a junior representative team to Wellington later in the season. Mr; H. B. Simmons, who was manager of the Wellington representative side which visited Taranaki recently,

said'that the match was played in the friendliest of spirits and a good game resulted. The hospitality extended to the team was everything that could be desired and the conduct of the team was excellent. It was decided to thank the Taranaki Union.
