TRANSPORT OPERATORS

OFFER OF ASSISTANCE

The council of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, in a letter to the Prime Minister, has offered the assistance of the licensed commercial J goods transport operators of the Do-! minion to the Government in the event of national emergency. The council met recently in Wellington and passed a resolution assuring the Prime Minister of the wholehearted support of the alliance in the defence of (New and offering to'-place the whole of its ..transport facilities .ahd organisation at the disposal of the Government The alliance, it was stated, desired to co-oper-ate with the Government in planning for the utilisation of road transport facilities with the- greatest degree of efficiency.

The secretary of the 'alliance, Mr. H. J. Knight, in an interview, said that this was not merely ■ a patriotic gesture but a practical offer of help. It was hoped and believed that the Gov ernment would accep' it in that spirit and would confer with the industry Then, ,in the , event -Of emergency, everyone would know exactly jvhat was to. be done. Mr.- Knight said that the alliance realised the importance of the transport industry in defence. It would be useless the Government merely taking over trucks without the necessary organisation; the owners and operators of the vehicles - obviously were best qualified to drive them.
