ANNUAL CONFERENCE

TRIBUTE TO ITS SERVICE

AUCKLAND,.This Day.

"Notwithstanding, the apparent . selfishness of the age I am satisfied there is still a very ;'large' proportion of the community ready to serve." said the Deputy Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, when opening the annual conference of the New Zealand Division of the Legion of Frontiersmen today. Mr. Allum paid tribute to the spirit of service to the Empire that lay behind the work of the legion under Commandant J. C. Findlater and his staff..

The conference ,is being attended by about 150 , members from: all' parts of New Zealand, and is the first at Auckland for about eight years:

Mr. Allum said that the aims of the organisation were, expressed in active patriotism. Its endeavour was to serve the Empire, not merely talk about serving. •:■ .^ : '

After Mr. Allurri left the 'conference, business began in camera. A smoke social is being held toiiight, arid a church parade tomorrow morning. In the afternoon the commandant will lay a wreath on the Cenotaph.,
