FIRE-FIGHTING POWER

MR. MARKS'S RETIREMENT

The opinion that the fire-fighting power of the Wellington Brigade is second to none in New. Zealand was expressed in a letter received today by. the Wellington Fire Board .from. Mr. Marcus Marks, who has been Government representative on. the board since its inception. He has been succeeded by Mr. L. Glover, who took his place at the board table at today's meeting. Mr, Glover is secretary of the Fire Brigade Employees' Federation and of the Wellington, Taranaki, and Nelson Fire Brigade Employees' Union. The board decided to place on record its appreciation of the services of Mr. Marks. The chairman (Mr. S. S. Dean), welcomed Mr. Glover, who said he had always been interested in the Fire Board and hoped to maintain that interest. "I cannot retire from the board with-, out expressing the pleasure I have experienced in my association with you all and the splendid spirit' of cama-; raderie that has existed on the board,' not- only with you but also with past j members of the board," stated Mr. Marks in his letter, which Was" • addressed to the chairman. "I have had the honour of serving on the board as the Government representative since its inception, and it has always been a pleasure to me to sit around the table ' with calm and reasonable men whose only desire has been the welfare of the city. ±:<y"l feel proud at the knowledge that, the fire-fighting power of the city- <hi which I have resided for 71 years) is now second to none in the Southern Hemisphere. I would also like to express my appreciation of the unfailing courtesy of the secretarial staff, and the superintendent, officers, and men of the brigade, a staff of \vhich Wellington may well be proud."
