LOWER HUTT

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, presided.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in reply to a petition from the business people against the action of the Government in appointing Mr. J. W. Mawson as sole town planner, defended the action of Cabinet, contending that this would meet all the necessities and ensure a more speedy accomplishment of the town planning.

A taxi service was granted permission to establish stands at the Prince Edward Theatre, the corner of Penrose Street and White's Line, the corner of Pretoria Street and King's Crescent, the corner of Waterloo Road and Birch Street, and the Massey Avenue reserve. The charge would be £1 per stand per annum.

The name "Anderson Avenue" was approved as the name of a new street.

-Councillors J. E. F. Vogel and W. C. Gregory, with the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) were elected as the nucleus of, a physical welfare committee.

On the recommendation of the reserves committee it was decided to continue fencing the eastern side of the Recreation Ground.

Fireman T. W. Jarvis, of, Masterton, was appointed as an additional permanent member of the Fire Brigade. Fireman. Wilson was promoted to the position bof second class fireman. The council approved the action of the works committee in arranging to supply an "additional 10,000 gallons of water per day to" the Eastbourne Borough Council to enable it to supply water to the residents of Point Howard. .

In reply to Councillor Morrison the Mayor said that a subdivision in which a 40ft street had been approved had been authorised in 1931. Councillor Morrison said he hoped no further permits for, such streets would be granted. In reply the Mayor said it was not the policy of the present council to allow 40ft streets. The Government would not approve of streets less than 50ft wide, except to the Housing Department, which was a law unto itself. He understood there were three applications coming shortly for 40ft streets for the Housing Department. Councillor Morrison said they would have his strong opposition. The building report showed that .36 permits had been- issued for work to the vMue of £22,897 as against 26 to the value of £10,712 in the same month last year. - ' The traffic report showed that eleven persons : were prosecuted during the month for breaches of the traffic regulations.
