RESIDENTS AND GUNFIRE

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —It is quite time something was done about the "guns" on Point Jerningham. It may sound all right to those who reside away from this point, but for the householders living within a radius of several hundred yards it is undoubtedly "dynamite," especially for the residents of houses built on the almost sheer face of cliffs, of which there are many. When such days for celebration as the King's Birthday, etc;, come around, householders nearby have the ■experience forced upon them of terrific blasts, generally 21. . Houses are shaken from piles to roof top and windows severely jarred. Apart from this the ground must react in some way sooner or later as the jar can be distinctly felt as each report of the guns shakes its way along the lulls. Surely some better spot could be chosen for this type of salute. Point Halswell, for instance, is almost bare of houses. These guns on Point Jerningham are planted almost in. folks' back yards in a thickly-populated area. It is high time the firing was doneelsewhere.-lam b e^ HAKEN>
